Mastering PowerPoint’s Master View

Would you like to change the size of the text on all bullet slides in your PowerPoint slide show with just 2 or 3 clicks? Or, would you like to have the UNL logo on all slides without having to insert it into every slide? By mastering the Slide Master View, you can have these capabilities and more. Another bonus is that your file size will be much smaller.

The Master View is the place to control how your slide show looks. By understanding how to correctly use the Master View, you can do anything from making simple changes to your presentation to creating a whole new template design — very fast and very easily.

By default, changes made on the Master slide will be reflected on all corresponding slides throughout the presentation, while changes made on individual slides only affect those specific pages. So, rather than make changes on 5-50 slides, make your customization change once!

NOTE: If you do make a change to something on an individual slide, the Master setting will not override it.

Making changes in the Master view

Screen shot of View - Master - Slide Master menuTo access the Master slide view, go to the menu bar and click on View > Master > Slide Master (see sample screen at right). To change the “look” of a presentation, you will be working with the Slide Master.

For slide masters there are two separate masters: content slides and title slides. The Slide Master controls the look of all slides, including fonts and other attributes. Be sure to modify the Content Slide Master before making changes to the Title Master.

A sample change using Slide Master

Let's say you have finished your entire slide show and decided that the font size on the bulleted text needs to be a bit larger. Rather than making this change to each and every bullet list in your slide show, you can make the change once on the master slide and it will globally change every bulleted list in your slide show.

1. With your PowerPoint slide show file open, go to View > Master > Slide Master. You will now see the master slide with the "Click to Edit Master..." boxes and the Slide Master View toolbar (see sample screen below).

2. Select the bulleted text level (click once to select all text) and make the text attribute change, i.e., change the font size.

3. Close the Master View by clicking on the “Close Master View” option on the Slide Master View toolbar. You must close out of the Master view before you add actual information into your slide show.

The changes you made on the Master should now be visible in all bulleted lists throughout your slide show. You can use this same procedure to change the title text font from Times New Roman to Arial, to add the IANR or UNL logo to all slides, or to make other changes or additions to your slide show.

DO NOT add your text into the Master slides! If you do, it won't show up when you go to view the slide show nor will it print. It will be locked inside the Master slides.

REMINDER: If you have already made a font size change to a bullet list on a single slide, changing the font size on the Master will not affect the bullet list on the single slide. Changes to individual slides will override the Master Template.
