Browser Tips for Firefox and Internet ExplorerDo you use the shortcuts available to help you browse the Web more quickly? Following are several tips to help you use Firefox and Internet Explorer more effectively. NOTE: These tips apply to both Firefox and Internet Explorer unless otherwise stated. 1. Reduce your typing. You don't need to type "http://" or leave it visible in the Location/Address text box. Simply click once in the text box to select all text and type in the address of the website (ex: www.unl.edu or firstgov.gov). You can also press ALT+D to select all the text and then simply overtype the existing address. 2. Use the History file. You can return to pages you visited in the last 30 days (a value you can change if you wish). This makes it handy to get back to sites you visited previously, but didn't bookmark. To see your history file press Ctrl+H. 3. Use multiple tabs in Firefox or multiple windows in Internet Explorer. You can keep the current page on your screen (for example, a search results page) and open another page in a new tab or window. Right-click the link and select the "Open in New Tab/Window" option. NOTE: Using a tab within the Firefox window effectively gives you a new browser window, but without all the memory overhead of a full window. To open a new tab within Firefox, press Ctrl+T. 4. Expand the page to Full Screen view with F11. This effectively adds 25% more viewing area to your screen. F11 hides the title bar, menu bar, address bar, and status bar. Press F11 again to toggle back to regular view. 5. Put your most often visited bookmarks on the Personal Toolbar. Put the mouse pointer over the icon left of the Web address. The pointer will turn into a hand shape. Click-hold-and-drag the icon to a place on the Personal Toolbar. You can also group bookmarks in folders in the Personal Toolbar Folder. To create a folder in Firefox, right-click on an open area of the Personal Toolbar and select “New Folder” from the shortcut menu. Then enter the name in the Properties dialog box and click the OK button. In IE, choose Favorites on the menu, then Organize Favorites. Select a folder or individual link, click Move, and place it in the Links folder. 6. Bookmark the search results page if you don't have time to check all the sites you think may be relevant. When you select this bookmark, the search engine will rerun the search for you. 7. Find text within a page. After conducting a search and going to one of the suggested pages, you can quickly find the search term within the page with the Find feature. Press Ctrl+F to open the Find bar or dialog box and type in your term. 8. If the text on the screen is too small or too large, you can quickly change it. Use Ctrl++ to increase the size, Ctrl+- to decrease the size, and Ctrl+0 [zero] to return to normal. NOTE: Firefox only.
