UNL’s “Toolbox” of Communications StandardsThere’s a new “Toolbox” of communications standards available for everyone who works at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Developed by an ad hoc University Marketing Design Team, the Toolbox is based on standards approved by Chancellor Harvey Perlman to provide a positive, consistent identity for the University. As the introductory copy for the Toolbox states: “The University of Nebraska-Lincoln communicates with many and diverse audiences. ... The guidelines in this Toolbox were designed to assist University communicators in the process of implementing a simple, attractive and economical identity system that is flexible enough for campus units to retain individuality within the University framework.” IANR, like all parts of the University, is implementing and will follow these standards. Toolbox TrainingA number of workshops on how to use the Toolbox have been held, and more will be scheduled. IANR Communications and Information Technology (CIT) will provide a statewide videoconference of the Toolbox training workshop to acquaint Extension personnel with the standards in the Toolbox. The videoconference is scheduled for Friday, June 10, from 10 a.m. to noon (central time). There will be time for questions. The training videoconference will appear on satellite channel 103 statewide; it also can be watched on campus on channel 4. Future ResourcesThe Toolbox will continue to evolve over time, with changes and additions made as they are identified. The Toolbox, a single reference for all aspects of the University graphic identity, is available on the Office of University Communications’ Resources page. Several subgroups now are working on new information for the toolbox, including news writing, PowerPoint templates, and video (with special emphasis on color). There is a small section on the Web in the Toolbox that will be added to; that subgroup is working on standard colors, as well. When you have questions regarding Toolbox use, Renee Lanik, a graphic designer in CIT and a member of the ad hoc University Marketing Design Team, is an excellent resource – phone 472-2860; e-mail rlanik@unlnotes.unl.edu. You also may contact your regular CIT contact, or Judy Nelson, publishing coordinator in CIT – phone 472-3031; e-mail janelson@unlnotes.unl.edu.

Update to Firefox 1.0.4 and Add the IE View ExtensionFirefox 1.0.4 was released on May 11 and Mozilla.org recommends that all users upgrade to this latest version. Several significant security bugs have been fixed. The Firefox 1.0.4 Release Notes page provides information on What’s New (security fixes), Known Issues, and Frequently Asked Questions for the Firefox 1.0.4 release. InstallationUse Firefox’s FPT Site to quickly download the full 4.6M exe file. You can use this file to update your current installation of Firefox or to install it for the first time.
Add the Firefox IE View ExtensionExtensions are small add-ons that add new functionality to Firefox. With IE View added you can click on a bookmark of an Internet-Explorer-only website (e.g., Lotus Notes webmail or the Employee Self Service site) and it opens that page in a new IE window. To install IE View, please follow these instructions.
For each page that needs to be viewed in Microsoft Internet Explorer, go to the page and bookmark this page. In the Tools menu, select the “Always View This Page in IE” option. Now, when in Firefox, you can click on this bookmark and a new Internet Explorer window will open to that Web page.

New Antivirus Software at UNLBy now you have probably heard rumors to the effect that UNL has changed the antivirus software vendor. Those rumors are in fact true and the new vendor is Sophos. Sophos has been in the antivirus software arena for a significant time and has won a number of awards for its performance regarding virus/worm detection. The contract with Sophos is currently in force and runs for three years, expiring in June 2008. The present contract with McAfee expires on June 30, 2005. However, we have an additional 30-day grace period which means that all McAfee Antivirus software installed on UNL computers and home computers of UNL faculty, staff, and students must be uninstalled by July 31, 2005. Because of the overlap of the contracts, there is some latitude in how quickly the changeover to Sophos antivirus software occurs. UNL Information Services staff are in the process of developing documentation and software (CDs, file server connections, etc.) to facilitate this change. There is a capability within the Sophos software to install the antivirus software from a central location. Therefore, within UNL’s network (both on and off campus), it will be possible to install the software without using a CD or other media. This factor will allow for fairly rapid software deployment to a large group of computers in any given time. At locations outside of the UNL network, installation of the software will need to be done using traditional methods (CDs or other media). From an end user point of view, there are different configuration options within the Sophos software. However, the end result is the same. The software is updated automatically, scans all files on the system, cleans and/or deletes files as needed and will notify the user if viruses are found on the system. That’s about all we can ask for. Can we guarantee that every virus will be intercepted? Probably not. The virus writers don’t notify the antivirus vendors before they turn a virus loose in the wild. The other antivirus software packages can’t catch everything either. As computer users, we still have to be prudent about what attachments we open and where we surf on the Internet. Sophos can’t take care of everything and we can’t expect it to do so. But it is a capable product, and the changeover to it will occur very soon. We’ll keep you posted. ~ Terry Bockstadter
