Lotus Notes Settings for Internet E-mailThe main topic of the April Lotus Notes team meeting was to discuss Notes accounts using listservs. Several troubleshooting tips for sending e-mail from the Lotus Notes full-client software were given at this meeting and I want to share those with you. These tips are based on version 5.0.8 or newer. If you have an older version, please contact your unit computer support person for updating Lotus Notes. Format preference for sending to Internet addresses: The default format of messages sent to Internet accounts (individual and listserv addresses) is Notes Rich Text Format. This format is basically unknown to many other programs; and therefore, often is ignored. The MIME format, which is well-known by most, e-mail programs, including Eudora, will more closely display the messages with the bold, italic, and other font characteristics you intended. NOTE: For e-mail programs that don't recognize MIME, this may result in creating attachments or other results not desired. To check and change your Notes settings, go to File > Mobile > Edit Current Location... On the MAIL tab, select MIME Format for the last item titled "Format for messages addressed to Internet addresses." Click on the "Save and Close" button. If your Notes Preference is set to MIME, your e-mail messages to listservs (and individuals) should stay closer to their original forms. But, making the change above does not mean that all your messages sent to listservs will now have your font characteristics. Each listserv can be set to allow/not allow MIME; but more importantly, each member can set that for themselves. Generally speaking this is done automatically at subscription time. Assuming that the specific listserv allows MIME (at this time all UNL Listservs do), when you subscribe yourself, this listserv option will be set as you have your software set up. If someone else, such as the owner, subscribes you then the "MIME" option will be set to the listserv default (at this time most UNL Listservs default to NOMIME, but that is quickly changing). Format preference for incoming mail: This option should be set to No Preference. Follow these instructions to check (and change) your Notes setting.
NOTE: You can edit the "Work/Home" information in this dialog box, but do not change your name (if that option is active). The name that is located in this area is how your e-mail reaches its destination. If you change this name, or alter it, it will break the connection to your mailbox, therefore, you may not be able to send or receive mail. If your name has changed or is incorrectly listed or the organizational unit is wrong in the Address Book, contact the UNL Information Services (IS) Help Desk (472-3970). IS will submit the changes to the NU Computing Services Network person who maintains the university-wide address book. How to correct a "mail file owner" problem: Click the New Memo button and observe how your name is displayed in the letterhead above the date and time. If it says something like "Kathryn A Notter Sent by: Kathy Notter," then you have a problem. Your name should only be listed once, without the words Sent by... If you have this problem, here is the fix:
Sending a reply to a listserv message: If you are replying to a listserv message, choose "Copy into" from your green action tool bar and select "New memo." This will make for a cleaner reply; however, be sure to check (and change) the address in the TO: field. This method allows you to edit/remove items from the message. Question on listservs and addresses: If you have questions about which listservs you are on, what is your Internet address, how to set up a listserv, or other items, please see the IANR e-mail Web page <www.ianr.unl.edu/email/>. ~ Kathy Notter |
PowerPoint Animation TipsThese Microsoft PowerPoint tips are from the Element K Journals. You can see sample tips for Windows, PowerPoint, and other applications at their Web site (www.elementkjournals.com/tips/) and subscribe to receive tips through e-mail. Turn off PowerPoint’s animation effects (97/98/2000)Don't want to display a slide show's animation effects? You can temporarily disable them. Choose Slide Show > Set Up Show from the menu bar. Select the "Show Without Animation" check box in the Show Type panel. Click OK to apply the change. Launch your slide show and as you advance through the show, none of the animations will play. When you want to display the animation effects again, reopen Set Up Show dialog box and deselect the Show Without Animation check box. Applying the same animation effect to multiple elements at same timeWant the same animation effect on several items on the slide? Rather than selecting each individually and assigning the effect, you can select all of them and assign the effect at once. Go to a slide with several unanimated objects. Choose Slide Show > Custom Animations from the menu bar. Click on the Order & Timing tab (For 97, click on the Timing tab), then while holding the CTRL key down, check each of the items you want to animate in the "Check to animate slide objects" box (For 97, in the "Slide Objects without Animation" box). Next, select an "Entry animation or sound" effect under the Effects tab and/or change the "Animation order" in the Order and Timing tab area. When you are finished, click OK to apply the animation effects. ~ Lana Johnson |
